Carla Visi
Powerful singer subtly combines axé and samba
The singer Carla Visi was born in Salvador da Bahia in 1970, and for years was part of the trend-setting music scene in her native region. Her career was launched when she replaced Daniela Mercury in the group Companhia Clic. Few artists have combined axé music with samba, but Carla Visi has succeeded in doing so to great effect. Her work strongly reflects the fact that Brazilian music is a rich mix of styles and that Afro-Brazilian percussion is a thing of great beauty. Carla Visi calls herself ‘a messenger of peace, energy and axé from Bahia.’ In her music she explores the boundaries between the subtle chords of afoxé and the powerful drums of candomblé.
