"Two Friends, a Century of Music" - World Premiere in Amsterdam!
A legendary duo, leaders of the Brazilian Tropicália movement of the 1960s, are back on stage. The 2015 Viva Brasil Festival opens on Thursday 25 June with an exclusive inaugural concert by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Under the motto ‘Two Friends, a Century of Music’, Caetano and Gil are launching a European tour in Amsterdam. Gilberto Gil (who was also Brazil’s Minister of Culture between 2003 and 2008) and Caetano Veloso are responsible for no fewer than 103 albums, and are regarded as the two most influential artists in all of Brazilian music. They were two of the leaders of the Tropicália movement, which arose in the late 1960s in Brazil during the country’s military dictatorship. Tropicália brought about far-reaching changes in Brazil’s musical culture, including mixing traditional Brazilian music with bossa nova and American pop.
Tropicália brought about changes not only in music but also in poetry, film, theatre and the visual arts. The movement had an enormous influence on the outlook and behaviour of an entire generation. After living in exile for some years in London, in 1972 Caetano and Gil returned to Brazil and grew into the international figureheads of MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira). The duo was (and continues to be) responsible for a stream of musical hits. In 1993 their collaboration led to the acclaimed album Tropicália 2, created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this movement. Now, 22 years later, the two friends have got together to share the stage once again.
